Who I am

I am a South African educated teacher, originally from Namibia, where I experienced a richly diverse cultural environment and grew up learning multiple languages alongside English, my home language. This upbringing has provided me with a deep understanding of the needs of language learners and minorities.

Passionate about the arts, I thrive on collaborative efforts to create beauty. I believe in the universal human need to connect with our artistic expressions. My concern for others’ well-being led me to complete my MCouns in 2021 while working full-time. This has allowed me to provide Probono counseling to minorities, Asylum seekers and survivors of torture, abuse, and trauma.

Over the past 9 years, I have worked in Hong Kong across learning centers, drama centers, and schools, honing my skills as a versatile educator.

I am dedicated to continual improvement in both my teaching and pastoral care skills. I prioritize my students’ needs above all else and am adept at establishing boundaries that support their growth.

With a proven track record in leadership roles ever since high school, I have since been placed as a From tutor, a Year 7 coordinatior (CKYPLK) and a Head Teacher at Monkey Tree. I excel in teamwork and am committed to fostering a supportive educational environment.

In the classroom

In August of 2023 I joined Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School,a Private independent through-train school.A rarity in Hong Kong, with an exceptional reputation. The school follows Cambridge IGCSE up until year 11 and then student move over to the IB Program.

I spent time working within KS3 where I was placed as a Form Tutor. This means that i spent a lot of time with my students, building relationships with them and learning about their struggles. We organise activity days with the students and we also do international trips with them. In April 2024 we took our year 6 classes and their parents, to Shanghai for 5 days. During this time I lead my class and their parents to keep strict time and saftey rules. We worked tih the guides who spoke mainly Mandarin and taught them how to work with students.

We teach classes of 24-30 students, with English as the main teaching language and Cantonese as their language of instruction in pastoral aspects.

I have been known to build and maintain relationships with both my students and their parents. I work closely with my head of year and our Principal to helo students who are struggling with mental health issues and with anxiety. Hong Kong is known to be a pressure cooker for students and teachers alike and as such my speciality in psychotherapy and anxiety workshop training was well utilised.

From 2017-2023 I worked at a local Hong Kong School using their curriculum to teach Primary ESL students. During this time I taught large classes of 25-30 children, with a minimum of 4 SEN per class. My school emphasized the HK Net Scheme’s literature program with a strong co-teaching component, so I typically had a co-teacher and a Chinese assistant in class with me.

During the onset of Covid-19 in Hong Kong, when schools closed, I took the initiative to create educational videos and worksheets. These resources served as models for other teachers to adapt for their own classes.

As Zoom lessons became prevalent, I experimented with various teaching styles, integrating tools like Quizziz and maintaining our writing segments. While I usually conducted Zoom lessons independently, I collaborated with a local teacher Ms Judy Kam, for translations and encouraged students to use Chinese (their L1) when they struggled with English, which significantly boosted class participation.

I also created demo lessons to showcase our teaching program to parents, participate in kindergarten visits, and deliver presentations to parents and CPD workshops.”
